Cuckoo for Leroux

If you don’t know who Sydney Leroux is, you’re not alone.  Take this time between the World Cup and the club seasons for most of the world and watch at least the highlight videos from the Women’s U-20 World Cup, going on right now in Germany.

Leroux, who turned 20 a couple weeks ago, is her squad’s Charlie Davies:  a ridiculously fast and confident striker who just makes things happen.

Leroux is second in the tournament with four goals in two matches and has helped the U.S. to second place in its group with one match to play. Group-leading South Korea feature’s the tournament’s leading scorer, Ji Son Yun, who already has five goals.

Leroux is no flash in the pan. In the 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup, she won both the Golden Ball and the Golden Shoe scoring five goals in six matches.  But some credit for that success may be because she had played in the previous U-20 Women’s World Cup as well:  the youngest player ever at 14.5 years old.

If you have a chance, the U.S. plays South Korea in a rematch of the U-20 Final on July 21.  The U.S. guarantees itself a spot in the next round with at least a tie.  And with Leroux and Li, it could be a highlight-reel bonanza.
