US v. Algeria: Let’s Talk Ball Possession

I was out of town on business, but I’m back now and it’s time to catch up on this site’s most popular feature.  As always, using the Ball Possession Heat Map compiled by FIFA.

The Ball in the U.S. Back Third:  16.04 minutes

The U.S. spent 23% of its time in possession of the ball in its own back third.  13% of which was in front of its own goal.  Algeria spent 28% of its possession in our third, 16% of its total time in front of our goal.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Total Minutes in U.S. back third: 16.04
  • U.S. in Possession:  7.36 minutes
  • Algeria in Possession: 8.68 minutes
  • Algeria in Possession on Wings:  3.72 min.
  • On U.S. left:  3.14 minutes
  • In U.S. center: 9.12 minutes
  • On U.S. right: 3.78 minutes

The Ball in the Midfield: 30.25 min.

The U.S. spent 49% of its possession in the middle of the field.  Algeria spent 47% of its possession in the middle of the field (17% on the left; 15% in the middle; and 15% on the right).

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Total minutes in midfield: 30.25 min.
  • U.S. in Possession:  15.68 min.
  • Algeria in Possession: 14.57 min.
  • On the U.S.’s Left:  8.49 min.
  • In the Center of the field:  9.77 min.
  • On the U.S.’s Right:  11.99 min.

The Ball in Algeria’s Back Third:  16.71 min.

The U.S. spent 28% of its possession in Algeria’s back third.  Algeria spent 28% of its possession in its own back third.  14% of the U.S.’s possession (4.48 min.) was in front of the Algerian goal.  16% of Algeria’s possession (4.96 min) was in front of its goal.
