A Look Back: The 2002 U.S. Gold Cup Statistics

Inspired by Ryan’s excellent post Brian McBride and the Era of the Target Striker, we’re taking a look back at the McBride era.  We’ll start with the U.S. team stats from the 2002 Gold Cup, which the U.S. won.

Here are the U.S. stats:

  Shots Svs CKs F Off
Sums 96 17 41 87 17
Avgs 19.2 3.4 8.2 17.4 3.4

US – Kor 9 4 4 14 7
US – Cuba 16 4 4 22 1
US – El Sal 19 2 8 21 3
US – Can 36 3 13 18 0
US – Cos R 16 4 12 12 6

And here are our opponents’ stats:

  Shots Svs CKs F Off
Sums 36 23 16 80 9
Avgs 9 5.8 4 20 2.3

Korea 15 3 4 21 2
Cuba 6 2 2 24 3
El Salvador 5 3 4 11 2
Canada 10 15 6 24 2
Costa Rica 12 2 5 21 3

With only two matches down in the Gold Cup, it’s hard to make too many valuable comparisons.  But if you’re interested, the U.S. stats so far are available in our preview of the Haiti match.  After the Gold Cup is over, we’ll revisit these statistics and compare them to the 2009 stats.
