Is Costa Rica Our New Biggest Rival?

I’m no more a fan a Mexico than any other U.S. fan.  But since January 1, 2004, only three teams have beaten the U.S. more than once in that span:  England, Brazil, and Costa Rica.

We last beat Costa Rica on June 4, 2005.  And in the past five years, we are 1-2-1 against them.  They’re the only CONCACAF team that has outscored us head-to-head (6 goals to our 4).  Brazil is the only other team to score 6 goals against us (though in 2 matches, to Costa Rica’s 4).

On the other hand, we are 5-1-1 against Mexico in the past 5 years, scoring 12 goals and conceding 5.  Our last loss to Mexico was on March 27, 2005.

And for those curious about today’s opponent, Grenada, we are 2-0 against them in the past 5 years, with 3-0 and 3-2 victories over them (both in 2004).

For a summary, by opponents, for the past 5 years, check out the newest tab on our site:  U.S. Results by Opponent
