Super Subs: Part I

We would like to turn our attention this afternoon to the men who come off the bench.   We’re all familiar with the general statistics for all players, but let’s examine a couple that are substitute specific.

Today, we’ll introduce you to what we mean via trivia questions about our MNT substitutes from January 1, 2008 to the present.

  1. How many US substitutes have come onto the field while the US was winning and by the end of the game, the US had lost?
  2. What US player has had the most minutes as a substitute during this span?
  3. What player has scored the most goals as a substitute during this span?
  4. What player has received the most cards as a substitute?
  5. Excluding stoppage time, what US player has played the fewest minutes as a substitute?

Here are the answers:

  1. Zero.  Since 1/1/08, no substitute has come on in a game the MNT was winning but eventually lost.
  2. Freddy Adu has played 183 minutes as a substitute.  Benny Feilhaber is second with 127.
  3. Jozy Altidore has scored two goals:  the most by an American sub during this span of time.
  4. Sacha Kljestan has been carded twice (both yellows) in games in which he came off the bench.
  5. Nate Jaqua played only one minute in his only substitute appearance with the MNT during this span (against England, May 28, 2008).
