In Praise of Freddy Adu — Superstar Sub?

While manipulating the numbers today, I noticed that Freddy Adu has a remarkable streak going as a substitute.  Since January 1, 2008, he’s got 183 minutes off the bench.  And during those 183 minutes no team has outscored the US.

And those six matches weren’t all against easy opponents:  Mexico, England, Argentina, Barbados, Cuba, and Costa Rica.  Six matches and during his time on the field, those teams did not outscore the U.S.

On the other hand, during those minutes, the US has only outscored Barbados and Cuba while Freddy’s been on the field.  That’s the joy of statistics:  analyze them the right way and they’ll prove almost anything.
